Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder Therapy

  • An orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD) is a condition that affects the muscles and functions of the mouth, face, and throat. OMDs can be caused by a variety of factors such as tongue thrust, thumb-sucking habits, airway issues, or abnormal muscle patterns.

People with OMDs may have difficulty with basic functions such as speaking, chewing, swallowing, or breathing. They may also have habits like mouth breathing or tongue thrusting, which can lead to dental or jaw problems over time.

Treatment for OMDs typically involves a combination of exercises, behavior modification, and sometimes the use of appliances or tools to help retrain the muscles and improve overall oral function. Early intervention and treatment can help prevent long-term dental and health issues and improve a patient's quality of life.

Feeding Therapy

  • Feeding therapy is a specialized intervention designed to assist individuals, particularly children, who experience challenges with eating and swallowing. These difficulties can stem from various causes, including sensory processing issues, developmental disorders, or physical impairments. The therapy is typically conducted by trained occupational or speech therapists who work to improve a child's ability to eat a balanced diet safely and effectively.

Therapy sessions are tailored to each individual's specific needs and may focus on enhancing oral motor skills, addressing sensory sensitivities, and developing positive feeding behaviors. The ultimate goal is to ensure adequate nutrition and to make mealtimes a more positive and stress-free experience for both the child and their family.

By addressing these feeding challenges early on, feeding therapy can play a crucial role in promoting healthy growth and development, as well as preventing potential complications related to poor nutrition.

Reflex Integration Therapy

  • Primitive reflexes are automatic movements that develop in the womb and early infancy to help with survival, movement, and neurological development. These reflexes should naturally integrate (or fade) as a child grows, allowing for more voluntary control over movements. However, when reflexes remain unintegrated, they can interfere with physical, cognitive, and emotional development and may be present in all individuals from infancy through adulthood.

Craniosacral Fascial Therapy

  • Craniosacral Fascial Therapy (CFT) is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that focuses on the craniosacral system, which includes the bones of the skull, spine, and pelvis, as well as the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Practitioners use a soft touch, typically applying about 5 grams of pressure (roughly the weight of a nickel), to feel for and release restrictions and tensions in this system.

The goal of CFT is to facilitate the body's natural healing processes, promoting relaxation and balance in the nervous system. It's important to note that while some individuals report benefits from CFT, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy is limited, and it should not be used as a substitute for conventional medical treatment.
